From Corwith and Landers to Will County and Bensenville, Chicago’s rail names conceal very different trips. Gate addresses, cross-town transfers, and depot work matter.

Rail ramps and equipment depots in Chicago

Chicago drayage begins with a precise ramp name. A container at BNSF Corwith, UP Global IV, CN Harvey, or NS Landers can be described commercially as “Chicago,” yet each produces a different truck trip. The metro also has a large network of equipment yards, repair locations, and holding points. Choosing the closest marker is rarely enough to establish the correct handoff.

The table is a location reference. Releases, gate instructions, equipment-owner authorizations, and current operator notices determine the visit that can actually take place. Several operators have multiple regional yards, so carry the street address into the truck order.

Understand the Chicago interchange

CMAP’s describes a regional system containing all six North American Class I railroads as well as switching and other rail operators. That density explains why an inbound railroad and an outbound railroad may hand freight over at different places.

A cross-town dray transfers an intact container between named terminals. It is different from delivering the cargo to a Chicago receiver. To arrange one, identify the releasing railroad facility, the receiving railroad facility, both transaction references, and the receiving deadline. Confirm who supplies the chassis and what happens to it after the container is handed over.

Do not assume that a container traveling through Chicago needs a truck transfer. Ask the service provider how the booked connection is made. Where a truck is required, it needs a complete terminal-to-terminal order rather than an instruction to “interchange in Chicago.”

The describes freight-rail improvements, roadway grade separations, and rail flyovers across the region. It provides context for the overlap between railroad operations and road access. For an individual truck, use the approved approach to the specific gate and current road conditions; a short straight-line distance between yards is not a promised transit time.

City and inner southwest ramps

BNSF Corwith and Cicero are distinct facilities. Corwith uses West 43rd Street; Cicero uses West 26th Street. BNSF’s also distinguishes these from Willow Springs and Logistics Park Chicago. Keep the full terminal name when reconciling a BNSF release, especially if a customer’s instructions use only “Chicago BNSF.”

CSX 59th Street and Bedford Park likewise require separate routing. The city facility is at 2101 West 59th Street; Bedford Park is at 7000 West 71st Street. The Mid-America Freight Coalition’s and describe the two locations. Proximity within the southwest rail district does not make them interchangeable pickups.

Norfolk Southern’s four references are 47th Street, 63rd Street/Englewood, Landers, and Calumet. Use the name on the current rail instruction. These sites sit within different parts of the South Side rail network and can involve different gates and equipment arrangements.

For Englewood, the railroad’s gives 169 East 63rd Street and also shows Indiana Avenue. Use the entrance shown on the terminal map when reconciling an order that names Indiana Avenue.

For Landers, use 7540 South Western Avenue from the . The map distinguishes the truck entrance, exit, and service gate. The operator publishes ZIP 60620; address-search results can differ on the postal code, so retain the railroad’s address and follow its entrance instructions.

The 47th Street and Calumet references remain separate from both Englewood and Landers. A request for an NS Chicago pickup should therefore include the terminal, not leave dispatch to infer one from the railroad name.

The southern belt and Will County

CN Harvey and CN Joliet are different terminals in the . Harvey is the Chicago terminal reference on South Center Street. Joliet uses Draper Avenue and has its own . Identify the facility before checking the service window or planning a connection.

UP Yard Center in Dolton is another south-suburban handoff. It is separate from Global IV in Joliet and Global II in Northlake. The railroad’s provides facility and driver resources for that location.

Iowa Interstate Blue Island is listed at 2050 Prairie Street on the railroad’s . The directory now follows that operator reference. An older Vermont Street address may persist in saved instructions; obtain the current access directions before routing a truck. IAIS publishes live-lift windows and a noon cutoff separately, so an afternoon gate opening does not by itself establish that a shipment can meet its rail cutoff.

BNSF Willow Springs is the Santa Fe Drive facility in Hodgkins. BNSF Logistics Park Chicago, or LPC, is in Elwood. UP Global IV is on Centerpoint Way in Joliet. The identifies its own facility maps and operating resources. A shared logistics district does not make LPC and Global IV the same terminal.

For a Will County warehouse delivery, give the carrier the individual receiving building and dock appointment. For a cross-town move back toward the city or northern suburbs, identify that second terminal and its deadline before the first pickup. A quote based only on the Chicago metro name can conceal a substantial repositioning leg.

Northwest references and older terminal names

CPKC Bensenville is recorded at 10800 Franklin Avenue in Franklin Park, near the O’Hare-area logistics district. It is a different operating geography from the South Side and Will County terminals. The identifies the Franklin Avenue gate reference under the former CP name. Retain the current carrier identity and the specific Bensenville facility when arranging the visit.

UP Global II is the Northlake reference at 301 West Lake Street. UP’s explains the transfer of Global I operations to Global II. An old routing sheet naming Global I should be checked against the current release rather than used to recreate a former truck destination.

The same principle applies to legacy railroad names and terminal abbreviations. Match them to the current operator, street address, and unit reference. Where two documents disagree, the shipment provider needs to resolve the location before dispatch. Familiarity with the older name is useful background, but it should not override a current facility assignment.

Equipment yards, lifts, and the final return

Equipment yards and repair locations are spread across Chicago, Forest View, McCook, Harvey, the Elwood/Joliet district, and Chesterton in Indiana. Confirm the assigned location and the handling or repair required before arranging the visit.

Pay particular attention to operators with multiple addresses. ITI/CMC has separate Chicago and Wilmington references. distinguish its facilities and gate/lift schedules. Integrated Industries has Lawndale, Elwood, and Harvey references. ConGlobal has Forest View and Joliet references. Specify which one appears on the release.

BNSF Lot 15 and Lot 16 in Elwood are also separate yard references from the LPC rail terminal. Their operator is now IMC Logistics, following . If the instruction names a lot, keep that lot designation and address on the order. A rail pickup, empty-storage visit, and chassis transaction can concern nearby premises while requiring different authorizations.

is at 2131 Logistics Court. Its Containerparking booking service may appear in equipment instructions, but the dispatch order still needs the Joliet yard address and the arranged transaction.

Before a grounded pickup, establish the lift window and suitable chassis. Before a wheeled drop, determine whether the chassis remains with the container. A yard may be accessible when a particular handling service is unavailable; plan around the service needed, not merely the gate’s opening time.

For a receiver drop, agree on the empty-ready notification and later collection. For an authorized street turn or local reuse, match the owner’s approval to the new export booking, container type, and condition requirements. The fact that a nearby exporter needs equipment does not itself authorize reuse.

When cargo must leave the box, arrange a warehouse or transload service with its own receiving address and handling specification. The covers the additional cargo and outbound-vehicle decisions. Keep the empty-container return in that plan after stripping.
