Terminals, rail ramps, and equipment depots in Norfolk
The Norfolk port market spans several Hampton Roads cities. Norfolk International Terminals is in Norfolk, Virginia International Gateway is in Portsmouth, and Portlock and several equipment references are in Chesapeake. A shipment described as “Norfolk port” needs the specific terminal before its truck approach and receiver appointment can be planned.
The equipment destination is another decision. Pinners Point, a chassis yard, a marine terminal, and a Chesapeake depot can have different acceptance instructions. Keep the container’s return designation separate from where the chassis starts or stops.

The CSX Portsmouth address identifies an office. Confirm the current physical truck handoff for an assigned rail or equipment transaction instead of treating an office marker as a universal pickup gate.
NIT and VIG have distinct approaches
Norfolk International Terminals, or NIT, is the Hampton Boulevard reference. The port’s describes its container operation, road connectivity, truck reservations, and Central Rail Yard expansion. Current operator instructions should identify the applicable entrance and transfer zone for the visit.
Virginia International Gateway, or VIG, uses 1000 Virginia International Gateway Boulevard in Portsmouth. The identifies its semi-automated container operation, reservation system, and on-dock rail connections. It is not another gate at NIT.
Give the carrier the terminal name and receiver’s actual premises. A Norfolk-origin pickup and a Portsmouth-origin pickup can create different local itineraries even if both are sold under the same port-market name. Ask the carrier to assess the suitable current road approach and any regional crossing for the actual load.
Avoid using published capacity or average-turn claims as a promise for a particular truck. Unit availability, the accepted reservation, handling, and road conditions still determine the visit that can be carried out.
Coordinate reservations with the released unit
The Port of Virginia uses PRO-PASS for truck reservations at its main container terminals. Check the current terminal procedure and match the reservation to the transaction, equipment, and driver arrangement. The receiver’s appointment is a separate commitment that must fit after the actual pickup.
Before dispatch, reconcile the unit number, release, availability, and any unresolved hold. If the customer needs a drop, agree on when and how the container will be reported empty. That later collection may need a different terminal or supporting-yard reservation from the import pickup.
For an export, confirm the terminal and vessel receiving dates under the booking. Arrange authorized empty supply and shipper loading before the loaded gate visit. A broad gate-opening time is not evidence that the booked vessel is already receiving the shipment.
Pinners Point and chassis destinations
The port’s states that empty returns are designated through its Empty Return Matrix. The notice is dated April 2024; use current port operating resources for today’s return designation and hours.
Read the container and chassis instructions separately. A Pinners Point container handoff does not necessarily terminate the chassis, and a chassis start/stop location does not automatically accept the ocean container. Give dispatch the reference and physical destination for each required transaction.
For a grounded return or collection, confirm the handling window. If the equipment remains mounted for a hold, agree on the chassis arrangement during storage. A later receiver unload can affect which return sequence is possible, so settle the next handoff before assuming the same truck can close both tasks that day.
Chesapeake depots and inland rail
The equipment references include , Hale/Coastwide on Enterprise Circle, and . STG’s current directory gives the Portsmouth address for its Norfolk drayage operation. Include that street address when arranging a visit, especially if an older instruction still names XPO or Cavalier Boulevard.
For a depot enquiry, identify the unit owner and whether the task is release, return, repair, storage, or another service. Give loaded or empty status, size and type, and chassis condition. Confirm the assigned location can perform the requested work rather than applying a company-wide capability to every yard.
The describes rail access at NIT and VIG. A booked on-dock rail connection may move the unit inland without a local truck collection from the waterfront. Ask where it will next be released and whether a dray is required at this stage.
NS Portlock is a separate Chesapeake rail terminal. gives 2704 Josef Theurer Lane for Portlock. Use the railroad release and entrance instructions for that terminal; a marine-terminal release or depot return calls for a different destination.
Choose the cargo’s next receiving point
For direct delivery, supply the receiver’s full address and unloading appointment. For a warehouse transfer, specify cargo packaging, count, dimensions, weight, and outbound transport. Identify the handling building and include the empty return after stripping. The helps compare the complete options.
An approved holding stop should state where the unit waits, whether it stays on a chassis, and who collects it next. Include that scope when comparing proposals, along with the actual NIT or VIG origin and final equipment destinations.
